She sat beside her
This piece was shown at the New Museum Los Gatos July through October, 2024.
It explores the relationship between self and others. The torn paper blocks represent the people in our lives, and when viewed together, they create a holistic understanding of ourselves. The piece suggests that boundaries are like permeable membranes, allowing for connection while also emphasizing the balance between individuality and otherness.
This piece features a rich texture! I used a pastel ground medium and a carbon steel paint underlayment to create depth, which I then washed with a deep indigo that stained the wood panel substrate. I allowed a thin wash of paint to flow through the center, bringing cohesiveness to the artwork.
