Newsday
Measuring 30x30 inches, this mixed media piece is comprised of newsprint and maps. The surface is lightly coated with black and white paint, adding subtle color and text that contribute to the piece's texture and dimension. The title was inspired by pages from the Wall Street Journal, which were used in the painting, and where the artist worked early in her career.
"Newsday" was started in Santa Fe and completed several months later in Berkeley. This work marks the beginning of my journey into mixed media. It was the first time I moved beyond traditional painting materials and began experimenting with texture and layering using non-traditional materials. The foundation of the piece is newspaper, selected not only for its visual interest but also as a nod to my career in media.
I chose a restrained color palette to evoke a sense of transition and blur the lines between the past and the present. In many ways, this piece represents the foundation for everything that has followed in my artistic practice.
